Our musical composers are Rachel Goodwin and Hervé Dréan who have been playing early period music for the last thirty years. During this time they have composed the original sound tracks for several son et lumière productions and musical works for theatre. The project for “Jeanne et ses Chevaliers” takes them back to their first love – the music of the Middle Ages. Our soundtrack comprises more than forty original compositions based on the style, rhythms and harmonies of the 14th century and played, where possible, on early instruments.

In order to create the very wistful wind sound of one of the opening pieces of music, they had to make a new horn-type instrument that would recreate the sound of an original 14th century pipe as they were unable to find any suitable flute-like instrument that was acceptable to them. They approached their local dairy farmer who was delighted to let them have any number of old cow’s horns. Having selected a suitable sized horn they carved a wooden mouth-piece which could be played like a recorder, cleaned out and drilled holes in the horn to suit Hervé’s fingers and then tuned their new instrument by enlarging the holes where necessary. The result is nothing short of amazing.

William’s love song in the Market posed different challenges and Hervé sings this beautiful song, which they have arranged in Motet style in three parts, in early French, but with an English accent! When recording this piece, he improvised with his saz, a sort of Turkish lute, and so the recording is unique!

In scene 8, where Guillaume is praying in the chapel before being knighted, the composition is based on a 13th century hymn dedicated to St Magnus, an early Christian monk from the Orkney Isles. The hymn has been arranged in authentic, medieval form in the Scottish tradition of that period and is sung by Rachel and Hervé.

The recordings have been reworked incorporating many different sound samples and re-mixed on computers by their son Martin and his colleague, Mickaël, who are studying audio engineering in St Brieuc, as a project as part of their work experience for their Diploma.
